First impressions: brand new, it offers eight ensuite rooms (twins, triples and dorms) in a converted 18th-century stable that’s part of a working farm.
Why it’s special: eco friendly — solar heating, reclaimed telegraph poles and pantiles, and on-site recycling.
Hitting the sack: rooms are spartan. A bed, a locker, a bin and a chair: that’s your lot. Duvets, pillows and covers are provided, towels are not.
Sampling the fare: Dave, the chef, does a mean fry-up for less than £5. For lunch there’s a range of sandwiches (£2.60), baked potatoes (£3.20) and cakes (£1.50). In the evening, head a mile down the road for local mussels or crab salad and new potatoes (both £8) at the Jolly Sailors pub.
Access all areas: the two dorms, kitchen, lounge and laundry have been designed to be wheelchair accessible.
Added attractions: beaches and birdwatching near Scolt Head Island, sailing, coastal walks and windsurfing. Deepdale hosts a jazz festival in August.
Bottom line: dorm bed £10.50, twin £13.75pp.
What we think: ideal for those who are prepared to sacrifice some creature comforts for good value.
