Green half-term breaks for the family

From train rides in Cumbria and cycling in Norfolk to seal-watching in Kent and climbing trees in the Isle of Wight, Christopher Middleton takes his pick of Britain's eco-friendly centres and places to stay with the children this half-term.
It's not easy treading lightly on the planet when you have two children in
the back of the car, plus half a ton of travelcot and Wellington boots. But
while a wholly green half term may be impractical for the average family, we can
all do our bit to make the autumn break less of the motorway-led, fossil-fuel
fest it has traditionally been.
Here, then, is a selection of eco-themed excursions (Green Days) and short
holidays (Green Stays). All right, they may leave a bit of a carbon footprint,
but the tyre tracks won't be quite as deep as usual.
Say "How!" in Norfolk
Live like a Sioux Indian by spending a couple of nights in a teepee on an
eco-friendly campsite at Burnham Deepdale, three miles from Brancaster Beach and
a 15-minute drive from Holkham Beach. Teepees come with real fire, fold-away
chairs and fakefur-covered mattresses. A sleeps-six model costs £90 per night
(minimum two nights), available October 21-26 (01485 210256,
www.deepdalefarm.co.uk).
